Tour Plan
In the morning, you will take a domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Semera. Upon arrival, you will drive for about 5-6 hours to reach Hamed Ela.
On the way, you will stop at Lake Afdera, where you can enjoy lunch and even take a swim in the salt-rich waters. In the evening, you will visit Lake Asale, famous for its salt flats. Here, you can enjoy a glass of wine or beer while taking in the stunning views and experiencing the unique sensation of floating in the lake.
Overnight: Camping at Saba River under the stars.
After breakfast, you will drive to Dalol, one of the lowest places on Earth at -125 meters below sea level. You will explore the breathtaking sulfur formations, visit Lake Assal, and see the famous camel caravans transporting salt.
Later in the day, you will continue driving to Erta Ale, Ethiopia’s active lava lake volcano. The journey takes about 4 hours through ever-changing landscapes of lava rock and desert sand. Upon arrival at the base camp, you will rest and have an early dinner.
At sunset, you will begin a short 20-minute trek to reach the volcano’s crater. Here, you will witness the mesmerizing boiling lava, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. After spending some time at the summit, you will return to the base camp to sleep under the stars.

Early in the morning, you will revisit the lava lake to see it in a different light before having breakfast. Afterward, you will drive to Afdera, where you can swim in the saltwater lake if time allows.
From Afdera, you will continue driving for about 5 hours to Semera Airport, where you will take a domestic flight back to Addis Ababa.
Today, you will explore Ethiopia’s vibrant capital, Addis Ababa. Founded in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II, the city sits at an elevation of 2,438 meters, making it one of the highest capital cities in the world.
Your city tour includes a visit to the National Museum, home to Ethiopia’s historical treasures, including the 3.5-million-year-old remains of “Lucy”, one of the world’s oldest hominids.
Next, you will visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral, Ethiopia’s main church, where Emperor Haile Selassie is buried. After an insightful day, your driver will transfer you to Bole International Airport for your flight home.
